Dyslexia impacts different people in different ways, no two dyslexics will present in the same way. It is a lifelong, usually hereditary condition that varies in severity. It is not related to intelligence, however individual strengths and weaknesses will impact how an individual copes with and adapts to their learning.
Dyslexic children and adults may have difficulty with accurate and fluent reading and/or writing, remembering and following instructions, poor phonological awareness and weak or slow processing skills.
There is an increasing awareness of the strengths and abilities of the dyslexic person and recognition of the many attributes and qualities that they possess. Dyslexic strengths and skills are more valued now than they have ever been.
Early identification of dyslexia is crucially important so that appropriate support can be put into place. Well planned, targeted intervention can have a significant impact on the individual.
